The LeBron Advisory Board

WHO WE ARE

From Akron Public Schools leaders to members of the community, we are a family. The LeBron Advisory Boards are our way of bringing the family together to give our I PROMISE Elementary and Secondary students the best programs possible. Each board is given its own task, based on its members’ strengths and connections: the LAB Elementary board focuses on our I PROMISE Elementary program; the LAB Secondary board focuses on our I PROMISE Secondary program; and the LAB Community board looks at the overall direction of our programs and how they are working within the Akron community. Although the LABs have their own objectives, they all have one thing in common: they all love LeBron’s kids!

LAB Elementary

In our first year of I PROMISE Elementary, we gave away laptops and school supplies. In our second year, we switched to school uniform shirts, branded socks, winter hats and incentivized wrist bands. Why the change? In year two, we turned to the experts at Akron Public Schools.

While laptops and school supplies sounded like great things to give a third grader, several local companies hold major back-to-school supply giveaways, and many of our kids weren’t using their laptops. Our expert board told us that we could do better, and so, we did.

The LeBron Advisory Board: Elementary is comprised of Akron Public Schools elementary teachers, principals and administrators. This diverse group meets monthly to discuss program curriculum, upcoming events and the general pulse of our students. Would a trip to a Cavs game be a good reward for our students? We ask our experts. Should LeBron call our kids right before their important testing days? We ask our experts! They guide our interventions and enhance our support for our students in a meaningful, research-based, and real way.

TONI ROBERTS

APS THIRD GRADE TEACHER, FIRESTONE PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

As I think back to my younger years, my mom would often say, “Toni, you’re just too nice!” Perhaps she was right a time or two, but for the most part, I feel there’s no such thing as being too nice. Making people happy is what makes me happy.

Being one of seven children, I learned early in life that treating others with kindness conquers all…and it’s very affordable too! Perhaps that’s why I became a teacher. You’ll never be rich in a monetary way, but the joys you’ll experience with your students are priceless.

It’s the simple things in life that mean so much to me...watching my first grandchild, Elaina, soak up life week by week, spur of the moment one-tank-trips with family and friends, finding bargain adventures on Groupon and surprising Rick, my husband, with such experiences as sky diving, zip lining, and flying a plane, and most importantly getting together with my family as often as I can.

I truly feel that as long as I am putting smiles on the faces of those I have the privilege of being with, including my LAB buddies, I’m living my life to the fullest!

LAB Secondary

The LeBron Advisory Board: Secondary is composed of teachers, principals and administrators from Akron Public Schools’ middle and high schools. The issues faced by middle and high school students is very different from what our I PROMISE Elementary students might face, and for this reason, we recognized the importance of turning to a new group of experts. The LAB: Secondary experts will help drive the Foundation’s next steps as LeBron’s kids graduate from I PROMISE Elementary and are inducted into I PROMISE Secondary. They will provide the guidance that the Foundation needs in order to effectively champion this program, grow with LeBron’s kids, and prepare for their futures as graduates of Akron Public Schools.

LAB Community

The LeBron Advisory Board: Community is made up of individuals from a variety of industries, professions, and walks of life. However, they all have two things in common: they love kids and they love Akron. This advisory board will serve as the eyes and ears of the Akron community for The LeBron James Family Foundation. As the place that LeBron calls home, the Akron community will always be central to the Foundation’s efforts. This board of community experts will be the driving force that continues to steer us in the right direction as we champion for our hometown and the kids in Akron.
