From Akron Public Schools to members of the community, we are a family. The LeBron Advisory Boards are our way of bringing the family together to give our Wheels for Ed kids the best program possible. Each board is given its own task, based on its members’ strengths and connections: the LAB Elementary board focuses on our Wheels for Ed program; the LAB Secondary board focuses on the Akron I PROMISE Network; and the LAB Community board looks at the overall direction of our programs and how they are working within the Akron community. Although the LABs have their own objectives, they all have one thing in common, they love our Wheels for Ed kids!
In our first year of Wheels for Education, we gave away laptops and school supplies. In our second year, we switched to school uniform shirts, branded socks, winter hats and incentivized wrist bands. Why the change? In year two, we turned to the experts at Akron Public Schools.
While laptops and school supplies sounded like great things to give a third grader, several local companies hold major back-to-school supply giveaways, and many of our kids weren’t using their laptops. Our expert board told us that we could do better, and so, we did.
The LeBron Advisory Board: Elementary is comprised of Akron Public Schools elementary teachers, principals and administrators. This diverse group meets monthly to discuss program curriculum, upcoming events and the general pulse of our students. Would a trip to a Heat game be a good reward for our students? We ask our experts. Should LeBron call our kids right before their important testing days? We ask our experts!
The LeBron Advisory Board: Secondary is composed of teachers, principals and administrators from Akron Public Schools’ middle and high schools. The issues faced by middle and high school students is very different from what our Wheels for Education students might face, and for this reason, we recognized the importance of turning to a new group of experts. The LAB: Secondary experts will help drive the Foundation’s next steps as LeBron’s kids graduate from the WFE program and are inducted into the Akron I PROMISE Network. They will provide the guidance that the Foundation needs in order to effectively champion this program, grow with LeBron’s kids, and prepare for their futures as graduates of Akron Public Schools.
The LeBron Advisory Board: Community is composed of a group of individuals from a variety of industries, professions, and walks of life. However, they all have two things in common: they love kids and they love Akron. This advisory board will serve as the eyes and ears of the Akron community for The LeBron James Family Foundation. One thing that will never change is that Akron, Ohio will always and forevermore remain LeBron’s hometown. An African Proverb shares that, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Therefore, this board of experts will be the driving force that continues to steer us in the right direction as we champion for our hometown and the kids in Akron.
The 330 Ambassadors are a select group of students from the Akron area selected each year by the LeBron James Family Foundation and Akron Public Schools. These students serve as role models for our Wheels for Education Kids. Together the 330 Ambassadors, the Akron Public Schools and the LeBron James Family Foundation work to execute Wheels for Education program initiatives. The primary purpose of the 330 Ambassadors is to serve as an extension of LeBron while he is away from home traveling for work.
Thank you to all who applied to the 330 Ambassadors. The Foundation is currently reviewing applications and the new class will be announced in June!
